FIVE STEPS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE’S FUTURE
Step 1: Write your feedback
Below is a suggested statement prepared by A Non Smoking Generation. Copy the text before proceeding to the next step. You are also welcome to write your own feedback.
I am concerned about the growing use of nicotine products among children and young people in Sweden and across Europe.
After decades of successful public health measures, Sweden has significantly reduced smoking among adults. At the same time, the tobacco industry has introduced new nicotine products, such as nicotine pouches and e-cigarettes, which have become increasingly common among young people.
Through appealing flavours, colourful packaging, and marketing on social media, these products have attracted a new generation to nicotine use. Today, more than half of Swedish upper secondary school students have tried nicotine pouches or e-cigarettes, and use continues to increase.
I believe that all nicotine products should be regulated in the same way as tobacco products. They should be subject to strict rules on marketing, flavours, and taxation. The EU should also ensure that new nicotine products cannot be used to circumvent existing legislation.
Stronger and harmonised EU regulations are needed to protect children and young people from nicotine addiction and to prevent decades of successful tobacco prevention efforts from being undermined.
